Writing Non-Negotiables
J Use correct spelling and grammar!
o Do not use fragments or run-on sentences.
o Make sure that each sentence has a subject and a verb.
o Vary your sentences, using a mixture of simple, compound,
and complex.
o Be careful with your plurals and possessives! Use apostrophes only where you should!
o In formal writing, stay away from using contractions (don’t,
he’s, etc.).
o Be careful with your homophones (words that sound alike but
are spelled differently).
o Always clarify your antecedent! That means don’t use the word “they” without
first telling me who “they” are.
o Keep your verb tense consistent. You shouldn’t switch back and forth between
present and past tense, etc.
J Watch your style!
o Use transitions carefully between paragraphs. Your writing should flow nicely.
o Make sure you have a clear, understandable thesis
statement. Your audience should
understand the point of your writing early on.
o DO NOT USE FIRST PERSON.
Unless you are specifically being asked to recount something from your own
life, DO NOT USE FIRST PERSON. It is
NEVER a good idea to use first person in a formal writing assignment.
o Do NOT say, “In this paper, I’m going to tell you
about…” That is weak. Just tell us!
o If you are making a point or trying to prove an argument,
BACK IT UP! If it relates to a specific
piece of literature, use quotations or references from that piece of
literature. ALWAYS support your writing
from the text.
